11: Escape

"Whoa," Brandon's voice echoed as a gust of wind flooded into Tyler and Lisa's side of the tunnel. Tyler couldn't see him, nor could he detect precisely where the voice had come from, but he felt a diffuse yet powerful aura enveloping the room — Resilience in the air that was both there and not. It felt oddly similar to the illusions and memories he’d seen.

A moment later the wind rushed to a central location, and Brandon emerged with nothing but his robes and a single bag of holding, laughing as the powers of the artifact wore off.

"Phew," he breathed. "Now that's an experience.”

"Brandon!" Lisa cried and tackled him in a hug.

"Oof," the man grunted as he stumbled back, his one good leg unable to handle the momentum of a Mid-Journeyman flinging herself full force at him.

He attempted to catch them both in a cushion of wind, but Lisa had already caught him and stepped away with a sheepish grin.

"Sorry, sorry — fuck, it's good to see that you're okay, even though I knew that you were right there beyond the wall.”

"Same," Brandon said with a catch in his voice. "Both of you."

His eyebrows rose as he glimpsed Tyler's physique. "You seem to be in better shape than I've ever seen you."

"Thanks!" Tyler said with a wide smile. "I guess that's what advancing to Peak-Journeyman will do to you, along with the Ritual of Bodily Rebirth. The mountain of food we found in these bags of holding certainly helped too."

He glanced down at his arms, appreciating that they'd regained most of the muscle they’d lost since his fight with the bird back during his first time on the island. He wasn't quite there yet, but of course the volume of his muscles was the least prominent change. Since then, he’d gone from a Peak-Novice just barely figuring out how to use his powers and to Peak-Journeyman stacked with a myriad of physical enhancements. "I'm just glad to see that the other artifacts came along with you, though."

"Oh yeah." Brandon tossed one multicolored crystal to each of them, which they caught with dexterity worthy of their Journeyman status. "The bag of holding almost didn’t make it."

He shuddered. "It’s way harder to control the magic around other magic things. I know we planned for it, but it still sucks that I had to leave all the other bags on the other side."

The red-headed man seemed to have to fight to keep from looking back at the collapsed tunnel where the mountain of treasures they'd stolen from the Stormchasers lay. Even Tyler, who couldn't use almost all of the things they'd found, grimaced at just how much money they'd lost.

Still, a bit of money for your life wasn't such a bad trade, he reminded himself with a shrug.

"We’re ready then?" Brandon asked.

"Yep."

Tyler and Lisa both sat in unison, and Brandon began to chant.

Though they'd heard him faintly chanting through the wall minutes prior, the feel of the magic together with the words was altogether different.
